Lethean Community Interest Company was dissolved in February 2024. One Hermes patron brings it back—and with it, a legal structure that locks everything we build into the public commons, forever.
A social enterprise, not a startup
CICs are UK-regulated entities where assets are permanently locked to community benefit. No exit to private equity. No acquisition that extracts value. The code, the brand, the infrastructure—locked by law.
Community as chairman
The company serves the community, not the other way round. If the community doesn't like it, the company cannot do it. A dictatorship in reverse—the collective rules.
Regulator-enforced improvement
The Office of the Regulator of Community Interest Companies oversees all CICs. We file annual reports proving community benefit. Failure to serve the community isn't just bad form—it's punishable.
The /oss commitment
Every line of code goes into the public commons. The full stack—consent-gated networking, distributed identity, creator tools. Protected not by licence alone, but by the legal structure holding it.
Written into law
The Articles of Association aren't marketing. They're legally binding.
Most of the 30-page document is standard CIC boilerplate required by law. But three sections define what makes Lethean different:
Not for profit
"The Company is not established or conducted for private gain: any surplus or assets are used principally for the benefit of the community."
No shareholders extracting value. No dividends. Every penny goes back into building for the community.
Objects
"The objects of the Company are to carry on activities which benefit the community and in particular (without limitation) to data processing, hosting, technical testing, research and development into countering the negative effects of technology on social sciences, family life and humanity."
Regulator-approved mandate: data processing, hosting, technical testing—and R&D into countering technology's negative effects on society, family life, and humanity. "Without limitation" means these are examples, not boundaries. A government-sanctioned charter to build tech that pushes back.
Powers
"To further its objects, the Company may do all such lawful things as may further the Company's objects and, in particular, but, without limitation, may borrow or raise and secure the payment of money for any purpose, including for the purposes of investment or of raising funds."
We can raise funds and invest in growth—but only to further our community objects. The regulator ensures we don't stray.
What this means in practice
Code stays open. Forever.
All intellectual property is locked into the public commons under CIC asset lock. No acquisition, no privatisation, no "we're changing the licence" surprise. The code you rely on cannot be pulled from under you.
Big tech can't buy us
CIC regulations prevent asset transfers to private interests. The platform you love will never be acquired by a corporation that doesn't share our values. Not today, not ever.

That's the point. Custom development is quoted per project based on scope. You think it, we build it. Features can be exclusive to your platform or, if it benefits everyone, added to the main platform (your call).
Unlimited. No per-seat fees, no "contact us for enterprise pricing" games. The retainer covers the platform—use it for 10 creators or 1,000.
Your data stays in the EU (Germany and Finland). You own your data. Full GDPR compliance. We provide data exports whenever you need them.
